Katarina Witt began ice skating at the age of five. Soon, her talents began to emerge and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. There she had a conversation with her teacher Jutta M ller. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. Her debut was a huge success. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt drew the attention of all and she has dominated her sport ever since. Olympic victory At the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' gold medal in figure skating following an extremely close contest. The following year she took home an even tougher competition. Although she lost in the competition for free skating, the gold medal was awarded to her efforts on the compulsory figures as well as the short program. Witt is the first female figure skater to have won the same event twice in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run acting. In spite of not receiving an award for gold, the young skater won over the audience. The year 1995 was the year that Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
